Hobo Nickels
Hobo Nickels are a form of folk art from the early part of the 20th century. The artist re-cuts a coin, usually a Buffalo nickel. Originally given as a token of appreciation for a hot meal or a warm dry place to sleep, they are now collected for their artistic merit as well. Early examples were cut with impromptu tools. Engravers recently have rediscovered this form of folk art and use it as a great exercise of modern engraving techniques.
